IT IS THE DRUGS THAT MADE ME DO IT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
IT IS THE DRUGS THAT MADE ME DO IT - Essay Example In claiming that their addiction led someone into a life of crime is a fallacy, at best. Criminal behaviour, like drug abuse, alcohol abuse, truancy, spousal abuse, promiscuity, and other risky behaviours are all lifestyle choices. One does not cause another. The confusion and misconception that has surrounded this notion for years lies in the fact that often risky behaviour such as drug abuse and criminal behaviour are, along with other behaviours, found in the same groups of people ââ¬â those who chose this type of life for themselves. In the following report, conclusive proof is respectfully presented to the court which conclusively proves that heroin abuse doe not cause a person to commit a crime. Criminal behavior is a deliberate lifestyle choice. The cost of drug abuse and known crime is huge; however, as will be shown shortly, much of the drug related crime either goes unreported, unsolved or not connected to drug abuse. The problem is pervasive both in the UK and within the United States. As early as 1998 it was estimated that in the UK alone the cost of drug offenders within the criminal justice system was conservatively set at à £1 billion per year, and that is just the beginning. Police in the UK estimate that approximately 50% of the drug related crime is hidden.1 This will be shown in detail shortly, but, in effect, either drug related crimes are not reported, are not solved, or the offender is convicted of the crime but it is not linked to drug abuse. The relationship between drug abuse and criminality has been noted empirically since the 1960s. However, it was not until the following decade that the extent and nature of this causal relationship began to be understood. As early as 1974 Greenberg and Adlerââ¬â¢s study concluded that heroin use could not be linked to criminal behaviour as the vast majority of the subjects in their study possessed a long history of

Summary and analyse the movie Downton Abbey Essay
Summary and analyse the movie Downton Abbey - Essay Example The second wave in the mid-20th century advocated other areas in regard to the social life of the women. The third wave in late 20th century sought to address geopolitical differences as speared by queer and masculinity studies. However, these waves were viewed as being less important thus standardizing feminine thought. Some groups in the UK enjoyed more advantages in regard to feminism relative to other groups. The male gaze appeared to be unavailable for black women because they were unworthy of the male gaze, triggered even more activism. Anglo-political feminism was more advantage relative to geopolitical contexts. Women were significantly underrepresented in media production. For instance, Women directors, writers, producers and editors only assumed less than a quarter of the employed media production people. Media is highly gendered with men taking the role of active pleasure looker apart from being media maker while women take up roles in consumer media and acting the role of passive pleasure looker. The woman takes the role of an object for men flattery. Other statistic shows that women make only 30% of speaking characters and that they are dependent on males, and their roles are household functionalities. Comics, romantic books and video games contort women by hypersexualizing their roles. The design assumes that the audience is male, and thus the foundation for erotic spectacles. Advertisements present women as objects for a price. The question that gaze is only credible for men brought even more compromise for Mulveys

Discuss Objectivity in Journalism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Discuss Objectivity in Journalism - Essay Example This paper will scrutinize the definition of objectivity, the manner it emerged to be a vital principle of journalism, the way it is currently defined and seem at the approach it might be handled in the future (Boveee, 1999, 45). Regarding to the vocabulary, the expression ââ¬Å"objectivityâ⬠denotes concentration on aspects sovereign of the mind, or, a staging of an outside world that is visible or demonstrable, particularly by scientific technique. In the fewer technical planet of journalism, an expert called Philips articulated objectivity was a number of canons centered on ideas of balance, equality, lack of prejudice, accuracy and impartiality. Intended for the news people, objectivity is all concerning reporting the information in a reasonable and unprejudiced manner. It is, in addition, related to expertise in journalism. Gerald Stone denoted it as the capacity of the reporters to distinguish his individual leanings and his aptitude to organize them. Journalists are obli gated to account the reality (Fortner & Fackler, 2011, 78). Yet that might not be clear-cut in a condition of ââ¬Ëmanifold realitiesââ¬â¢ a condition where no single ââ¬Ërealityââ¬â¢ is additionally applicable than another. However, to comprehend the multifaceted state of impartiality in present dayââ¬â¢s journalism, it is initially essential to perceive its development. The first journalists had extra urgent subjects to tackle than the chase of objectivity. Denouncement was a general law offence since the period of 16th century. In the meantime, the majority of European nations approved printing presses and copiers were issues to prior suppression (Friend & Singer, 2007, 68). Punishments were unsympathetic and untimely journalists like Daniel Defoe underwent the humiliations of jail and denounce for their articulations. However, Harris was put to prison, not since he printed vilifications, but since he wrote the reality, as he perceived it. The initial signs of revol ution emerged with Franklinââ¬â¢s addition of the liberty of the journalists. In spite of Franklinââ¬â¢s individual policy of perspective neutrality, news was typically reported in adherent style until the period of 19th century. This was also enhanced by the emergence of Reuters. As soon as they and additional collection wire services required generating money by promoting information to newspapers of manifold political insights, they resolved they wanted to stick to particulars and left the verdict to the journalists. Journalists themselves started to take on this performance as their individual audiences continued to be more miscellaneous (Miraldi, 1990, 65). The incursion of university graduates in a number of American correspondents commenced to shape new-fangled ideas concerning how to carry out work. Among of these thoughts was that reports required being realistic. By the period of 1920s, newspapers tried to draw cultured middle class persons who read by pressuring the ir commitment to principles of impartiality as what was termed consensually authenticated particulars about the globe. However, consensual corroboration did not extend for long. The increase of period of war half-truths and the post-war growth of civic relations destined that faith in aimed facts commenced to wane. To contradict this, Walter Lippman encountered half-truths at primary hand in World I War period commenced to typify objectivity as a technique. His thoughts received properly.

Promoting Health in the Community Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Promoting Health in the Community - Essay Example Rates for attempted suicide related to depression register at a rate of 0.3% for men and 0.5% for women (Commonwealth of Australia, 2009). These statistics in Australia are alarming which incidentally reflect similar rates in the global scene. To address the problems of depression in the country, causes, risk factors, and prevention in the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels will be discussed to include strategies to overcome some barriers. Causes of depression Depression is caused by various factors. One is the cumulative negative life experiences such as violence, chronic poverty, divorce, and death (Burns, Andrews, & Szabo, 2002). In the same study, adversities experienced by individuals specifically in adolescents during their teen age years are identified as another cause. Teenagers with poor interpersonal skills and with negative thoughts result in peer relationship difficulties and in coping with family issues (Robinson, et.al. 2008). In addition, the individualââ¬â¢s c ognitive qualities exert some influence into a personââ¬â¢s interpretation of negative life events. ... Low self esteem is also considered a predictor of adolescent depression as reflected in their poor physical and academic performance in school. Individuals with poor social skills are likely to develop symptoms of depression of particular concern are those experiencing difficulties in maintaining social relationship (Cole, et.al. 2001). Lastly, workplace stress is also related to high incidents of depression. Potential health outcomes Depression can lead to a variety of health outcomes. First, it can bring about physical symptoms such as increased blood pressure, heart rate, palpitation, and headache which may result to stroke or heart attacks if it persists (Horn and Miller, 2008). Second, it alters the emotional aspect as evident in the person experiencing sadness, irritability, mood swings, and hostility. Next, it affects behaviour so that the person starts blaming others, becomes defensive among others. Eventually, it alters the cognitive dimension of the person predisposing him to poor memory, excessive daydreaming, trouble concentrating, and preoccupation. Prevention strategies Primary prevention Primary prevention involves reducing the incidences of the disorder to include modifying risk factors. Initially, the individual should involve herself in sport activities of his interest. Such physical activity may not only maintain physical wellness but it diverts the brain from processing depressive thought (Weaver, 2009) and it also turn off the mind from boring daily routines. Another is to practice relaxation exercises like yoga, meditation, and listening to soft music since these may unwind and recharge the body and soul. Exercise for adult has become a part of community

The use of undrained triaxial test Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The use of undrained triaxial test - Lab Report Example The graph for normal stress against a shear stress is gives a straight line from the origin. This insinuates that for both shear stresses, an increase in normal pressure applied leads to increase in shear stress. Further, from the graph it is obvious that shear strength yields a greater frictional angle and failure envelope than that for the residual strength as expected for soils. With application of the masses, shear stress initially increased rapidly upto a certain point, after-which the increase reduced. Generally, this shows that with increasing loads, the shear stresses also increase. As shown in the graph, there is a strong positive increase observed in the value of shear strength upto the peak point where the slope starts to decrease into a shallow gradient. It is at this point that the residual stress is observed. The range for effective angles of friction range between 35 degrees for dense sands and 27 degrees for loose sands (Helwany, 2007, 107). Our results fall into these values that gives a medium density outcome for our sample. Consequently, the results are in line with the expectations that the peak strength should be greater than residual strength of the soil.Even though the experiment was successful in meeting its objective, there might have been sources of errors leading to slight deviations witnessed. Most obvious source is human errors arising when taking the readings from the instruments used. Further, there might have been mistakes when setting up the apparatus such as the shear box.

Compare role science & technology play in Lunar Men & Heart of Essay
Compare role science & technology play in Lunar Men & Heart of Darkness. How have attitudes & uses of them changed - Essay Example le genius and ability to make new things, gain a deep understanding of the world both philosophically and physicallyââ¬âtheir inventions too are used to allow other people to more profoundly understand the physical world. In Heart of Darkness, it is the Westââ¬â¢s ability to harness technology that makes the minerals and rubber of the Congo valuable and that makes it important to extract such products. But the novel also shows the limits to humanââ¬â¢s knowledgeââ¬âeven using technology and science humans cannot know everything. When they think the do, trouble occurs. These aspects of the roles of science and technology will be looked at in this essay. One of the main points of the book Lunar Men is the sheer joy of the intellectual curiosity Uglowââ¬â¢s heroes possess and show. They want to find out about the world, they want to learn new things. It is this sense of adventure and exploration that drives them, even though they donââ¬â¢t really leave their hometownââ¬âthey just meet in person. The adventure is what they learn about the world through their scientific experiments and from sharing information and curiosity with one another. It isnââ¬â¢t a physical journey across the world. Indeed, they donââ¬â¢t need to take such a journey because they can bring the world to themselves through their experiments and discoveries. Boulton, for example, when he is starting out feels an air of energy surrounding him and feels the time is ripe for ââ¬Å"adventure,â⬠but he doesnââ¬â¢t get on a merchant ship. Instead: ââ¬Å"Armed with the security of Anneââ¬â¢s money and his own inheritance from his father, Boulton made plans. The workshop and warehouse on Snow Hill were too small and he dreamed of a site big enough to have stores of raw materials, drawing and design rooms, workshops for all stages and products, and a warehouse for finished goods. He also wanted a mill to drive machines . . .â⬠(65) The latest technologies let him stay at home. For other men, like Robinson, for example, worldly
